What are the benefits of Private Menopause Care?

1. Speed of Access and Waiting Times
-
NHS: Waiting times for NHS menopause clinics can be very long, sometimes lasting over 18 months in some regions. Initial appointments are with a GP, who may not have specialised training.
-
Private: Appointments are often available within days or weeks, offering a "vital lifeline" for women with severe symptoms needing urgent help.
2. Consultation Time and Quality
-
NHS: Standard GP appointments are generally around 10 minutes, which may not allow for a full, in-depth discussion of complex, wide-ranging symptoms.
-
Private: Consultations are significantly longer, often lasting between 30 to 90 minutes. This allows for a comprehensive review of medical history, lifestyle, and a more tailored, holistic approach.
3. Treatment Options and Personalisation
-
NHS: Treatments are prescribed based on NICE guidelines. While this ensures safety, it may limit options to standard HRT types (patches, gels, tablets). Some patients report limited options based on local Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) budgets.
-
Private: Specialists often offer a wider range of options, including bespoke, compounded, or newer formulations not immediately available on the NHS. They will also be more willing to prescribe testosterone for low libido and mood.
4. Specialist Care vs. General Practice
-
NHS: Care is primarily managed by a GP. Referrals to specialised NHS menopause clinics are only made in more complex cases.
-
Private: You have direct access to a menopause specialist without needing a referral from your GP.
